Forty years ago this month an inventor named Martin Cooper made the first cell phone call in history in Midtown Manhattan.
10 years later, the first commercially available cell phone, the DynaTAC 8000x (pictured at left below) went on sale March 6, 1983, weighed in at about 2.2 pounds was 10 inches long and cost $3,995.
Today there are almost as many cellular subscriptions as people.
