Keeping Employees Engaged in Tough Times

There’s a good interview with Douglas Conant, former CEO of Campbell’s Soup Company on Harvard Business Review discussing the importance of keeping employees engaged in challenging circumstance. Conant had good success as CEO of Nabisco under challenging circumstances as well.

He makes some very good points on:

  • People First – Make it personal, people aren’t mind readers
  • Leadership – Both Art and Science
  • Issue Identification, Action Plans, Execution and importantly Tweaking along the way
  • Being Likeable and Approachable – you can’t get it done alone

Sun Tzu’s (sometimes “Sunzi” or”Sun Wu”) “The Art of War“, mentioned by Conant, written over 2,000 years ago is still relevant today and a superb source of leadership, organization, planning, motivation and execution content. You should read it!
