Why Good Leaders Pass the Credit and Take the Blame

There’s a interesting post on the HBR Blog today that’s worth a read even as I don’t completely agree.

The author, Tobias Fredberg, writes It’s no big news that leaders in turnaround situations tend to play a more prominent role in their companies than leaders in business-as-usual scenarios. What’s interesting is, in interviews, the CEOs who had led turnarounds took personal responsibility when things went wrong and did not hesitate to share the credit with their teams when things went right.

Having been involved in some turnarounds — helping make changes to correct the course is what I love to do — it’s what makes me tick  …  I couldn’t agree more with Fredberg’s above sentiment.
